Not every tender day comes with a doctor's note.
Sometimes it's a rainy Sunday when you're wrapped in a blanket and can't quite convince yourself to leave the couch.
Sometimes you've just had surgery.
Sometimes you're recovering from the flu.
Sometimes you've spent the entire day taking care of everyone else and suddenly realize you forgot to take care of yourself.
And sometimes... life simply feels a little heavier than usual.
Those are tender days.
When I first started dreaming about Tasty & Tender, I thought a lot about people recovering from dental work or illness. But the more I cooked, photographed, and shared these recipes, the more I realized something.
We all have tender days.
Once I realized that, everything else fell into place.
It was never just about recovery.
It was about creating recipes for life's tender moments, whatever they may look like.
If you're curious how the idea first began, you can read more in Why I Created Tasty & Tender.
They look different for everyone.
They're the days when crunchy salads lose to creamy soups.
When deciding what to make feels harder than actually making it.
When a smoothie somehow feels like the kindest thing you could make for yourself.
Or when you simply want dinner to feel comforting instead of just another task to check off your list.
I know those days well.
Some arrive because of health.
Others because of stress.
Sometimes because you've been traveling, working too much, grieving, celebrating, or simply running on empty.
Tender days aren't always about what's happening in your mouth.
Sometimes they're about what's happening in your life.
And on those days, a warm bowl of something nourishing can make all the difference.
Comfort Can Be Beautiful
One thing I've learned is that comfort doesn't have to mean boring.
A bowl of soup can be elegant.
A smoothie can feel a little luxurious.
Even a simple purée deserves a beautiful bowl, a drizzle of olive oil, or a sprinkle of fresh herbs.
I believe we eat with our eyes first.
When a meal looks beautiful, somehow it feels a little more special.
And on a tender day, those little moments matter.
That's what I hope you'll find here.
Recipes that are comforting without feeling ordinary.
Simple enough for everyday life, yet beautiful enough to make any meal feel a little more special.
Why "Tender"?
People often ask me where the name came from.
Of course, there's the food.
Tender vegetables.
Tender textures.
Tender bites.
But there's another meaning that feels even more important.
Tender is how I hope we treat ourselves.
With a little more patience.
A little more grace.
A little more kindness.
Especially on the days when we need it most.
That's really what this website is about.
Not just recipes.
Not just soft food.
But creating meals that make life feel a little easier and a little more beautiful, whenever you need them.
You Don't Need a Reason
You don't need to be recovering from anything to belong here.
You don't need braces.
You don't need wisdom teeth removed.
You don't need surgery on the calendar.
Maybe you're simply exhausted.
Maybe you've had a long week.
Maybe it's 110 degrees outside and the thought of turning on the oven makes you want to move to Iceland.
(If you're reading this from Arizona... you understand.)
Or maybe you simply love silky soups, creamy risottos, velvety smoothies, soft pastas, and meals that nourish without asking much from you.
If that's you, you're in exactly the right place.
Here's to More Tender Days
My hope is that Tasty & Tender becomes the place you visit whenever you're looking for a little comfort.
Not because life is always difficult.
But because life is wonderfully, beautifully human.
Some days call for celebrations.
Others call for a bowl of soup.
Or a creamy smoothie.
Or a comforting risotto.
Or simply whatever feels right that day.
Whatever kind of tender day you're having, I hope you'll pull up a chair, grab a spoon, and stay awhile.
I'll be here, cooking something delicious.
With tenderness,
Nancy
